Ben Babylon-A Rising Star
Ben at the House of Blues Photo courtesy of Kathy Babylon |
From the age of three Babylon was tagging along with his
famous musician father, Guy Babylon, who was keyboardist for the Elton John
band for 21 years before his sudden death of a heart attack in 2009.
During that time Ben was absorbing it all in, listening to
Elton John’s Benny and the Jets and
developing a love for the piano and keyboards. “I used to write stupid songs,
like four chords,” Ben said of his first attempts at writing.
“He always was playing music with his dad,” reminisces Ben’s
mother Kathy, who is also in the business. “I mean I could tell he had a love
for music that’s for sure.”
And this love for music has
transformed a little boy creating childish four chord songs and sharing them
with his father into a young man who has developed a maturity in his music
beyond his years. Now set to release his first album with his band I reminisced
with Ben about how it all began.
with Ben about how it all began.
At the age of eleven Ben wrote, “Goodbye Superman.” It was a
song, the first real song, written by a boy mourning the father who was his
everything. The tribute was written in the days before Guy’s funeral; a young
Ben determined to play it there to honor his father.
In the song Ben expresses the loss he and his family were
facing.
So Goodbye Superman and
Goodbye Our King
Goodbye Our Hero That Put Us
Under His Wing
Goodbye Our Answer
Goodbye Our Sum
Goodbye our World
and Goodbye The Kingdom
Babylon has no plans
to record the song for an album.
“That song has become more personal and I’m not gonna play it much anymore,” said Babylon.
“That song has become more personal and I’m not gonna play it much anymore,” said Babylon.
As personal as it is, Goodbye
Superman inspired Ben’s love of writing music. “After that I wrote a bunch more songs and
that’s sorta what started it,” said Babylon

Ben
is about to release his new album Dreams
for Sale with The Ben Babylon Band, which includes Alex Arnaout on bass,
Jagger Krusen on drums, and Brian Schwartz on guitar, all of whom Ben met
through a program at Rock Nation,
which brings young musicians together to help them make connections with other
young musicians.
“I’m really happy with the band,” Ben said. “We have just
such a good, a great connection.”
Babylon explains that their first single Burning Man is a song “about somebody in
particular, but it's about mainly like being in pain and coping with it.”
The band plans on having about eleven songs on their album,
with the guys still deciding on the last few songs to include.
“So
far we recorded ,mixed and mastered six songs,” Babylon said. “We have a lot of
songs that we're having trouble picking which ones to do. We don’t want to make
the album too long. So it will probably be around 11 or 12 songs.”
When asked about who he is listening to now Ben doesn’t
hesitate.
“It changes all the
time,” Ben said. “About three years ago I became like the biggest fan of the
Bens Fold Five.” Listening to Ben’s music one can see the influences that Bens
Fold Five has had on his music.
“But lately I’ve been listening to Bright Eyes,
portugal.demand.” He also goes on to include “People like the Black Keys. Those
are the people that I have been listening to a lot recently.”
So what is Ben’s biggest dream?
“It would be nice to be a successful band and be well recognized
and that would be cool,” Ben says. “But anything in music.” Going on he says,
“Personally I would like to do movie scores sometime, I don’t know, but that's
way in the future.”
For the time
being Ben is happy to be playing music with his band as his fan base grows.
Miquel Sala is just one loyal fan of Babylon.
“Ben is
really amazing! He understands keyboards as no one does, a truly keyboard
wizard. He's one of a kind!” said Sala.
Whatever Ben decides to do with his future, it will
certainly be bright. “I’m really excited about it and everything that is going
on with the band.”

Mona
Mona
Huffington Post actually said this band just might save Rock and Roll. Mona got their start in Ohio and Kentucky but soon after, the band moved to Nashville, which continues to be their home.
The band is: Nick Brown singer, guitar and keyboard player. Vince Gard plays drums, Zach Lindsey jams the bass, and Jordan Young plays guitar. The recent interviewed by HuffPost, took place right before they hit the stage to open for Silversun Pickups. When the band was asked which genre their music would fall into, they really didn't like the idea of being labeled as one thing or another. And when they finally did attach themselves to a genre, it was Rock and Roll, plain and simple. That's my kind of attitude! They are just who they are; a band, that loves music, and who can rock it out! As Nick Brown said, "I think there was a time (in the past) when there was a clear vision. People wanted to do something, people caught on and it was what it was. And they didn't call it like 'Gee, what is the new Ramones album sound like'. It was just the (bleeping) Ramones!" Oh how true that is! There really are too many "genre labels" for music, which is a shame because sometimes that boxes an artist in to being something that they didn't intend to be.
We have to say we are very impressed with Mona, and we agree, that this is the start of something big for them. We like the music, the lyrics, the singer's voice, and the feel and element of the actual video itself. We give Mona a Rock It! score. Their new album "Torches and Pitchforks" is available for download via iTunes and Amazon. Now check out their new video "Goons (Baby, I Need It All)". We added the lyrics below, to make it even better! Enjoy!
UPDATE- Fixed the wrong words! Newbie mistake #1, not double checking your lyrics!)
See you standing in line just to be there
And you're looking at me
Something 'bout the way I do my thang thang
I'm getting under your skin
So you know
It's something like a freefall
Your just, like the wind when you blow
Cos baby I need it all
I need it all
It's sin city with me
You don't care 'bout the who when where or how
Your so free
Tell me once again what's your name name
I'm getting under your skin and you know
It's something like a freefall
Your just, like the wind when you blow
And baby I need it all
I need it all
I'm getting under your skin and you know
It's something like a freefall
Your just, like the wind when you blow
And baby I need it all
Baby I need it all
I need it all
Baby I need it all
I need it all
I've got you under my skin and you know
Baby I need it all
I want you more than I know when I say
Baby I need it all
I want you more than I know when I say
Baby I need it all
I want you more than I know when I say
Baby I need it all

Kyshera
Kyshera
I discovered Kyshera just recently through Twitter. I decided to sit down and give them a listen and perhaps in my humble opinion explain how the songs made me feel and how each song came across to me.
The first song I listened to was 'Vote With A Bullet.' That's all it took to make me want to hear more. I'm not really into super hard music, but this song has such a mash-up sound that it totally works, and it totally rocks! I couldn't keep myself from jamming along. No, really, I jammed! :) I really can't explain the awesomeness of it, so just check it out! Make sure you got it loud! This song is smokin'!
The next video viewed was titled "Mannequine', and I have to admit, while I dug the song it was just not as good as 'Vote With A Bullet'. We take into factor that the video was posted a year ago, so you can obviously see that they continue to improve especially after hearing 'Vote With A Bullet'.
Also, it kind of helps if you listen without watching the video. Not because the guys are hard to look at, quite the opposite actually, but because you get distracted by the fact that the singer keeps looking at the camera at "inopportune" times. :) As one YouTube user posted, it was "slightly awesome mwahahaha". We agree. See the video here.
The third and last song viewed was titled 'Shelf Life', and has a political and social message. In the video a band member throws away money as a story is told onscreen of the billions spent for political nonsense and other wasteful spending by the human race. The video shows how with just a little money we could cure the world. Yet instead it seems money is being wasted on wars that need not be fought, or the amount women spend on make-up. The video sits well with the song and it is pretty eye opening. Seeing as how these boys are from across the pond, it shows how global these issues are. We are shown the someone in this video (the world) who sees the wrong yet will keep going along, allowing it to happen. But really, what can each as an individual do? There is only so much. We are tackled down by our jobs and our families, working for a government who cannot even cure world hunger. And we can't get everyone to change his/her attitudes. That's how life is. Here's the video for 'Shelf Life'
Overall, I would have to say, Kyshera has great potential to be an amazing band. With that said, we definitely think it would be worthwhile for you to check them out, and we give them a 'Rock It' score!
Let us know what you guys think! We can't wait to get your feedback!
